The colorful Porta Palazzo market in Turin

Passing through the charming Italian city of Turin, I went to the largest outdoor market in Europe, Porta Palazzo.

The name comes from an ancient Roman gate where merchants arriving in town settled. From the air, dozens of colorful tents line up to protect a plethora of vegetables and fruits produced locally or from exotic lands. On other tables are clothes, souvenirs and antiques. The market continues indoors in a building dating back to 1916, with sections set aside for meat and fish, charcuterie, and huge cheeses from all over Italy.

Both cultures and products are mixed there. Today, as for hundreds of years, it is a place where immigrants from Italy and other countries come to work in an attempt to find a better life.
